Technology and Innovation in the Culinary Business: Opportunities in the Digital Era
Hi everyone! I, Chef IDNWGTECH, and for many years I have seen for myself how crazy the culinary world has changed thanks to technology. At first, I was a bit stuck in the old way, still using ancient recipe books and traditional tools. Until one day... Bam! My restaurant's website collapsed due to a DDoS attack, and all my online orders fell apart. It was a wake-up call moment! I immediately understood, I had to level up, or my business would sink.
Now, I'm much more tech-savvy. I want to share my experience and tips, so that you can also take advantage of technology to advance your culinary business. So, buckle up!
From Handwritten Recipes to Restaurant Management Systems (RMS): A Transformation
In the past, I managed orders and stock of raw materials manually. Imagine, writing all orders in a book, checking the stock one by one in the refrigerator and warehouse... it was a nightmare! Mistakes happen very often, stock of materials runs out in the middle of rush hour, and orders are exchanged. I'm tired of asking for forgiveness!
Now, I use an amazing restaurant management system (RMS). RMS is not just an ordinary cashier application, you know. The features are complete: from online order management, automated stock management, to sales reports and data analysis. How to do it? RMS is integrated with my online ordering platform, so all incoming orders are recorded directly in the system. It also automatically calculates the stock of raw materials needed, and warns if the stock is depleted. Imagine the efficiency of time and energy I got!
Tips for Choosing the Right RMS:
* Integration: Make sure RMS is integrated with online ordering platforms, online payment systems, and other devices that you use.
Features: Choose an RMS with features that suit your business needs. Don't buy too many features but don't use them. Waste of money!*
* User-friendly: RMS should be easy to understand and use by all staff.
* Support: Make sure there is a responsive and helpful support team if there is a problem. This is very important!
Online Ordering: More than Just a Website
My restaurant website was initially just a static page with a menu and phone number. Duh, so outdated! Now, I have a website that is responsive, easy to access from various devices, and integrated with the online ordering system. This is a game changer, especially during the pandemic. Online sales have increased dramatically, and I can reach a wider range of customers.
Strategies to Increase Online Sales:
* SEO (Search Engine Optimization): Make sure your website is optimized for search engines. Use keywords that are relevant to your business, such as "nearby Padang restaurants," "Jakarta wedding catering," or "healthy food delivery."
* Social Media Marketing: Use social media to promote your business. Upload engaging, interactive food photos and videos with followers, and run paid ads.
* Reviews and Ratings: Encourage customers to leave reviews and ratings on online platforms like Google Maps and TripAdvisor. Positive reviews will increase customer trust.
* Loyalty Program: Create a loyalty program for loyal customers. Give them a discount or reward to get them to book again.
Big Data and Analytics: The Hidden
Secret of Success RMS and my online ordering platform generate a lot of data. At first, I was confused about what to do with that much data. Apparently, this data is a gold mine! I can analyze sales data, customer favorite menus, and order trends. This helps me in making business decisions, such as determining new menus, arranging employee work schedules, and optimizing raw material stocks.
Example of Data Use:
* Favorite Menu: By analyzing sales data, I found that the special chicken fried rice menu is the best-selling menu. This inspired me to create other variations of the fried rice menu.
* Order Trends: Data shows an increase in healthy food orders in the morning. I use this information to add a healthy breakfast menu to the menu.
* Use of Raw Materials: By monitoring the use of raw materials, I can avoid waste and ensure that there is always enough stock.
Other Interesting Uses of Technology:
* Kitchen Display System (KDS): KDS displays orders digitally in the kitchen, reducing the risk of errors and speeding up the food preparation process.
* Point of Sale (POS) System: A POS system that integrates with RMS facilitates the payment process and produces accurate sales reports.
* Robots and AI in Culinary: This is still relatively new in Indonesia, but the development of robots and AI in the culinary industry is very promising. Imagine a robot that can help cook, serve customers, or even make coffee.
Mistakes I've Made (and Valuable Lessons From It):
Not Doing Enough Research: At first, I bought RMS without enough research. As a result, the RMS turned out to be not suitable for my business needs and the features were very complicated. I had to subscribe for a year and ended up losing a lot! Lesson learned*: research before investing!
Ignoring Employee Training: I didn't train my employees well when I first used RMS. As a result, they have difficulty using the system and work processes so they are inefficient. Lesson learned*: employee training is important!
